Each year Long Eaton has an official switch on of its Christmas tree lights and also the festive lights that surround The Green, The Market Place and along the High Street. On Friday, November 28th 2003, at approximately 6:30pm, the Mayor Of Erewash Coun Brian Smith accompanied by the Mayoress, Eileen Knight, and MP for Erewash Liz Blackman, welcomed the hundreds of Long Eaton people who turned up to witness the event in the Market Place. Father Christmas was also in attendance for the children.

After the official switch on, the crowds were entertained by the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band playing Christmas songs and Carols. Members of the Oasis Church encouraged everyone to join in with the singing. Plenty of hot food and drinks were available in the form of Hot Dog and Burger stalls and some of the charity stalls provided food and refreshments for children, such as Fairy Cakes, sweets, crisps and bottles of pop.

There was plenty of entertainment for everyone; including fairground rides, Carol singers and street entertainers. Remembrance candles were on sale near the town's cenotaph in memory of family and friends who have passed away. All money raised from the candles will be going towards the Mayor's chosen charities which are: Magic Million (The Derby Cancer Appeal) Derby City and General Hospital Renal Development Fund and Guide Dogs For The Blind.

A record number of charity stalls (35) had been allocated and were positioned in The Market Place and along the High Street. Some of which held raffles with guaranteed prizes. One of the most popular stalls showed videos, photographs and information of past Long Eaton Carnivals and members of the Carnival Committee were available to give information on the proposed plans for the 2004 Carnival.

Below are some photographs of the event.
